History
The first library in Saybrook, known as the Saybrook Library Center, held its formal opening on September 14, 1940. It was first located on Main Street. It was sponsored by a local committee under the chairmanship of Mrs. Claire Wyckoff. Other members of the library committee are Mrs. Charles Youle, Mrs. C. W. Bartley, Mrs. Wilbur Winn, Mrs. Ruth Butler, Mrs. W.B. Stine, and Mrs. R.C. Short. Mrs. Merian M. Means was appointed library custodian. The library then moved to the building that was formerly Clyde Lewis' Watch and Jewelry Shop located on State Street. The library later moved to its current location, 204 S. State Street, just next door to its previous location. The library has occupied this location since 1985. The library is a member of RAILS, Reaching Across Illinois Library System and AGVerso, an interlibrary loan system that provides books for our patrons, as well as lending books to other libraries.
